Whitney Houston is finally back on track as some consider her comeback album no longer dubs her just the Queen of the Night but the pop diva of all time. Whitney is finally back and here to stay.
Early in the morning breakfast this week at the Stonestown Galleria Mall in the Sunset area in San Francisco was a line for a much-awaited purchase of Whitney Houston’s album at Borders. The new album has been a talk in the gaytown of Castro for a long time. Marketing collaterals such as promotional paper fans with Whitney’s album cover details printed on it were given away along the busy street of Castro a month before its release.
The album title “I Look to You” is also a cut in the album. The song can be a reflection of Whitney’s personal struggles with the words, “And every road that I’ve taken, Lead to my regret, And I don’t know if I’m going to make it , Nothing to do but lift my head…I look to you.” Although the song may appeal religious to some, yet in general it can speak about how we rely on a partner.
The gay men fans can’t help but relate with the carrier single and start to reflect on what the song means to them and their relationship. It is a reality that in a relationship one depends on another emotionally, mentally, or sexually. Yet, when a relationship fails what happens then to the essence of the phrase, “I Look to You?”
One will feel helpless, distraught and despondent for sure. What if you’ve been with a partner for a long time and you’ve depended on him or her for a long, long time? What if your world revolved around your partner and suddenly your partner is no longer there. Who can you look to now?
Definitely there will be friends and family members as your support team. However, you will feel they’re just not enough.
This album will surely add to bring back the inner strength in you. One of the 11 songs in the album perhaps also mirrors Whitney’s personal experiences. The song “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” is another inspirational ballad that could put you back on your feet and deal with life’s challenges.
Taking time to listen to this brand new album also brings the diva in all of us gay men mostly when it comes to recovering from unfortunate relationships. Truth be told, sometimes gay men should nurture their inner divas.
Rise up. Sing like Whitney anywhere you can.
